Dish It: Torta from Mike's Taco Club

GO BIG OR GO HOME

Scorching summer 2018, my younger sister is in town for the weekend and her request for things to do is beach and brewery. I decide to take her to San Diego beaches for some fun in the sun.

We spend a nice afternoon in Mission Beach, then head next door to Ocean Beach, where the brewery of her choice is located. As we walk down the street, we spot a small restaurant. It’s indoor seating just as big as it’s patio space and a line at the register. Before starting the belching marathon, we go in for some grub.

Trifecta Taco ($5.99)

The most popular menu item at Mike’s Taco Club is the Trifecta Taco. Spicy grilled shrimp, fish and scallops on a single sturdy yellow corn tortilla is finished with fresh veggies. Although it is a very GOOD taco, it is NOT my “Dish It” choice. Having said this, let’s get right into the starring dish.

Mike’s Torta ($10.99)

Mike’s Torta is huge, about the size of two standard burgers. Flavorful grilled steak, shrimp and scallops is the real triple threat. You heard right! And if this mighty combination isn’t enough to make you salivate, imagine it piled on fresh Mexican bread. Mexican bread is addicting even on it own. A soft, crusty telera sliced in half is toasted and then smothered with avocado. ¡Dios mío! The veggies in this Mexican mega-sandwich include chopped cabbage, onions, tomato and cilantro. Each bite brought in a wave of gusto. The dish fulfilled my taste buds and possessed my body in such a way that my feet underneath the table began to dance. ¿Bailamos?
