Son of a biscuit, I'm salivating.
If your morning biscuit is in need of an upgrade, then head on over to Downtown Claremont where you will find Grizzby’s Biscuits & Donuts. They specialize in making small batches of hand crafted goodies using whole food ingredients like unbromated non-GMO flour, local milk and eggs.
The small shop has been in business since April 2017 and is open for brunch hours only. I stopped in on a Sunday morning after catching up with foodie-friends and strolling through the farmers market held in the Claremont Village.
During peak hours you may not find space to sit down. There are two breakfast bars that seat up to 10. I waited in line to order a box of donuts and as I completed my order, two barstools became available. My mother and I sat down to enjoy a cup of coffee with the unique creations.
Two donuts topped my list and they are the Blueberry Coconut Vegan and the Goat Cheese & Quince. I also devoured the Mother Clucker Biscuit Sandwich.
Blueberry Coconut Vegan
When the server offered me the Blueberry Coconut Vegan donut, I was feeling agreeable, and therefore, accepted. As she placed the log looking thing in the box, I thought to myself, there are more appealing donuts on display. I’m glad I rolled with it because it is absolutely delicious–my favorite donut, in fact.
The vegan donut has a moister center and crispier exterior.
I love it not because it’s blueberry, not because it’s healthier but because it tastes like a perfectly made donut. The vegan is coconut based and the flavor is switched out on a monthly basis. ($3.25)
Goat Cheese & Quince
Another outstanding donut is the Goat Cheese & Quince. When you bite into this donut you get the creamy goat cheese glaze, chewy bread, crunchy toasted almonds and the tart moistness of the quince jelly. The flavor profile and texture complexity is on point, right here! Simply superb! ($3.25)
Grizzby’s signature biscuits are made from scratch daily.
It took many batches for these fellas to formulate the perfect recipes.
Mother Clucker Biscuit Sandwich
There is a lot of cluckery happening here and it begins with an amazing biscuit and ends with a fried chicken thigh. If you're going for brunch, I recommend you sink your teeth into this bad boy. Tender chicken is sandwiched with red onion, lettuce, pickle and smothered in honey mustard and garlic aioli. All the sauces are made in house and when it’s put together like this, it’s fire. ($7.75)
Candence (Canadian bacon, bacon, over easy egg, cheddar, potato cake, big herb sauce, $7.25)
Sammie (sausage gravy, over easy egg, green onion, biscuit, $6.50)
There is always one larger donut on display. Today, I had a taste of Hollywood. ($3.25)
Chocolate Caramel Cream ($3.25)
Dulce de Leche ($3.25)
In rotation are unique creations that vary from fun to sophisticated. The price point per donut ranges from $2.00 - $3.50. If you're a regular, be sure to join the rewards program.
Thank you, Chef Ian. We also give it two thumbs up!
